For doctoral and master's students coding qualitative data

From raw transcripts to themes you can defend.

The Qualitative Coding Workbook

Your methods textbook explained what coding is. Nobody gave you the tools to do it. This workbook is a fill-in coding system that takes you from the first read-through to a complete audit trail, with a worked example beside every blank template.

  • Coding worksheets built on Saldaña's first- and second-cycle coding
  • A master codebook and theme canvases built on Braun & Clarke
  • Trustworthiness and an audit trail mapped to Lincoln & Guba

Sound familiar?

Where qualitative analysis gets stuck

“I'm staring at hundreds of pages of transcripts and I don't know where to start.”
“My codes keep multiplying and I can't see the themes.”
“My committee asked for an audit trail and I don't have one.”
“I'm not sure my analysis would hold up to a reviewer.”

Coding is a process you can document, not a talent you either have or don't. When every step produces a page your supervisor can review, your methodology chapter is largely written by the time you finish coding.

How it works

Code. Build themes. Show your trail.

The full analytic path, with every decision written down as you go.

Step 1

Code the data

Immerse, memo, then code line by line or segment by segment, and build a master codebook.

Step 2

Develop themes

Cluster codes into categories, develop and name themes, map them, and test their quality.

Step 3

Prove your rigour

Reflexivity, inter-coder reliability where it fits, and an audit trail mapped to Lincoln & Guba.

What you will have

What you will have

  • Line-by-line and segment-by-segment coding worksheets
  • A master codebook with inclusion and exclusion criteria, exemplars and version control
  • Theme development canvases, a theme naming workshop and a thematic map
  • Inter-coder reliability tools, including Cohen's kappa worksheets
  • Adaptation guides for phenomenology, grounded theory, case study, narrative inquiry and ethnography
  • Reflexivity journals and a positionality statement builder
  • An audit trail checklist and trustworthiness evidence for your methods chapter

Is it for you?

Built for qualitative analysis

It is for you if

  • You are coding interview, focus group or open-ended survey data for a thesis
  • You are doing qualitative research for the first time
  • You teach qualitative analysis, or need a rigorous qualitative strand in a mixed-methods study

It is not

  • A textbook with chapters of theory before you can start
  • Software. The templates work on paper or alongside any coding software.
  • A replacement for your supervisor's judgement on your analysis

Questions

Before you buy

I'm using thematic analysis. Is the whole book relevant?

Yes. Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis is the default framework for the core chapters. Chapter 8 then adapts the process for other traditions.

Do I need inter-coder reliability?

Not always. The book explains when it is appropriate and when, as in reflexive thematic analysis, it is not, and gives you the tools if you need them.

Does it work with coding software?

Yes. The templates work on paper or alongside any coding software, and there is a planning sheet for moving your work into software.

Will it help me write the methods chapter?

That is a large part of the point: the reflexivity, trustworthiness and audit-trail templates produce the evidence your methods chapter needs.

Your transcripts are waiting

Code them with a process you can show, and themes you can defend.
